Abstract
The experience of these farmers and their families was immortalized in the 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath, by California writer John Steinbeck. Few people recognize that Steinbeck’s work was based upon on-the-scene reporting. Here is part of one of the stories Steinbeck wrote for the Monterey Trader (his local paper).
