Abstract

The American Communist Party formed in 1919. It grew during the Great Depression but lost members in the years preceding World War II because so many American communists were disgusted by the rule of Soviet leader Josef Stalin. As a result, the vast majority of Americans were not communists during the post-World War II years. They hated and feared this ideology. Nevertheless, Americans grew very afraid of communists in their midst during the post-war years. The question to consider here is why.
