Abstract

Both these documents acknowledge the existence of segregation in the North during this era, but how do they differ in suggestions of how to combat it? What “economic and social power” (in the words of Du Bois) did African Americans have during segregation? How do these varying responses to segregation in the North and South demonstrate that power?
