Abstract

San Francisco elected Harvey Milk to its Board of Supervisors in 1977, just a few short years after he had moved there from New York. Milk was representative of many gay and bisexual people who moved to San Francisco because of its climate of openness and tolerance. He was San Francisco’s first openly gay politician and at that time easily the most important gay political figure in the United States.
