Abstract

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was the first of a series of regionally based global trade treaties that lowered or eliminated tariffs for the United States and its trade partners around the world. Originally proposed by President George H.W. Bush, the treaty found support from his Democratic opponent in the 1992 election, Bill Clinton, as part of the latter’s effort to depict himself as more moderate than his party’s other recent presidential nominees.
