The Treaty of Limits between Mexico and Guatemala settled a long-standing controversy over the border between the two countries. According to the terms of the treaty, Guatemala renounced forever its claims to the Mexican state of Chiapas, including the District of Soconusco. From the time the region declared its independence from Spain in 1821, both Mexico and Guatemala had claimed Chiapas. The Treaty of Limits between Mexico and Guatemala decisively established the present-day location of the Mexico-Guatemala border and made most of the disputed territory a part of Mexico.
