Abstract

Bernhard von Bülow’s remarks on Germany’s place in the sun were delivered during an 1897 debate in the Reichstag, the parliament of the German Empire. The phrase was picked up and used in further speeches by Kaiser Wilhelm II and became symbolic of his government’s antagonistic attitudes in world and European diplomacy.
