Abstract

The Pacific Railway Act of 1862 created the legal framework for the construction of the transcontinental railroad and telegraph that would link the Missouri River and the Pacific Ocean by connecting existing railroads from the 100th meridian in Nebraska to the western boundary of Nevada. The act accomplished several things.
