Abstract

The United States and the Soviet Union came out of World War II as the two strongest powers. Meanwhile, a war-torn Europe began rebuilding and ensuring its security was of utmost importance to both Europe and the United States. While the Marshall Plan was vital in providing economic assistance to Europe, several events that occurred in 1947 and 1948 hastened the need for an alliance of collective security to prevent Soviet expansion and the spread of communism.
