Abstract
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was passed by Congress in 1969 and signed into law by President Richard Nixon on January 1, 1970. Its main goal was to protect the environment by making sure federal agencies think about the effects of their projects before moving forward. NEPA also created the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), which advises the president on environmental issues and checks federal programs to see how they impact nature.
