Abstract

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) can be understood as part of broader civil rights legislation. Civil rights laws that protected Americans from discrimination based upon race or other characteristics did not offer relief to those with disabilities. The primary focus of the Act, as stated in the first section, was to set a “clear and comprehensive prohibition of discrimination on the basis of disability.” The ADA creates accessibility standards for public accommodation and sets requirements for employers regarding employees and job candidates with disabilities.
