Abstract

The Antiquities Act, which was passed by the House of Representatives and Senate and signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, had two principal purposes, the first of which was applied narrowly to safeguard a variety of cultural, historical, and natural resources situated on federal lands and the second employed in an effort to increase the power of the executive branch of the U.S. government. Ultimately, Roosevelt took advantage of the opportunities encompassed in each of these complementary purposes.
