On January 29, 2009, newly inaugurated President Barack Obama signed the first piece of legislation in his administration: the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009. Following the signing, President Obama affirmed that this piece of legislation would continue to uphold America's founding principle “that we are all created equal.” This bill was introduced by Senator Barbara A. Mikulski and passed within the 111th Congress (2009–10). The bill directly addressed Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (2007), a Supreme Court decision that restricted the time period within which employees could file complaints concerning compensation discrimination. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act guaranteed the rights of workers to challenge pay discrimination by amending Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law gave workers their day in court to fight against unlawful pay discrimination.
