Abstract

On July 27, 1974, the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives voted in favor of three articles of impeachment against President Richard M. Nixon. The vote convinced the president to resign. By 1974, only one U.S. president, Andrew Johnson, had been impeached. However, a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigation into a 1972 break-in of the Democratic Party's campaign headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C., revealed that it had been undertaken by supporters and aides of the president.
