Abstract
The reconstruction of Western Europe after World War II was of utmost importance to the United States. Ensuring that Western Europe did not succumb to communism was necessary to protect U.S. interests and the future of democracy. On June 5, 1947, Secretary of State George C. Marshall gave a speech at Harvard University, laying out a program to finance the rebuilding of Western Europe and a vision for the future of the democratic Western world.
