Abstract

Industrialization is the profound economic transformation resulting from new technologies of production that swept the United States in the late nineteenth century. Specifically, it refers to two separate processes: the division of labor and mechanization. Division of labor means that the components of making any particular good are broken down into separate steps and each worker does nothing but that one step. Mechanization refers to replacing people with machines. Because both these processes improve efficiency, they augment production of whatever manufactured item becomes industrialized.
