Abstract

Baseball players have great nicknames; politicians do not. The exception is “Fighting Bob” La Follette—reformer, governor, and U.S. senator from Wisconsin. From the late nineteenth century until his death in 1925, Robert La Follette raged against big business and political corruption and fought for the interests of people he believed had suffered at the hands of both. He symbolizes the crusading reformers of the time period, which is often called the Progressive Era.
