Abstract

Anita Bryant (b. 1940) began her public life as an entertainer. She was a child star locally in Oklahoma, won the Miss Oklahoma contest and was a second runner-up in the Miss America pageant at the age of eighteen, and eventually became a popular singer in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She toured overseas with Bob Hope (1961), sang with the Billy Graham Crusade (1970), performed at the Super Bowl (1971) and Lyndon Johnson’s funeral (1973), and had a number of successful pop singles, including “Till There Was You,” “Paper Roses,” and “In My Little Corner of the World.” She also became a spokesperson in numerous commercials—including, most famously, one for Florida orange juice.
