Abstract

The Battle of the Bulge took place from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945. This massive German offensive movement at the end of World War II surprised Allied forces, especially Allied commanders, who were convinced that German forces were systematically retreating on all fronts. The battle's name refers to the punched hole that saw German panzer and infantry divisions pierce the Ardennes Forest of Belgium and literally split the Allied forces at their weakest point. In a battleground map, the thrust of the German forces looks like a giant nose that “bulges” into Belgium.
