Abstract

The late nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw an explosion in the development of American cities. As cities grew, so did the issues that come along with catering to large groups of people. Maintenance of services and sanitation played a vital role in attracting people to new areas, as did making sure that cities functioned overall at a high level. As cities expanded during this era, politics became more and more complex. The term Sewer Socialism came to represent the American Socialist movement centered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from the early 1890s to the early 1960s.
