Abstract

America is the land of opportunity. This idea has driven immigration for centuries and continues to be one of the most important aspects of the American mythos. The reasons that people come to the United States are, of course, far more complex than economic optimism and often are related to the conditions in a person's home country. Before the Civil War, several large waves of immigrants arrived from Germany, Ireland, and England, among other places in western Europe.
