Abstract

In the midst of the economic devastation of the Great Depression, a major ecological catastrophe severely worsened the suffering and devastation of Americans throughout the entire middle section of the United States. The Dust Bowl refers to a decade of severe drought, heat, and dust storms during the 1930s. The southern plains states, particularly Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, and Oklahoma, were the hardest hit from 1935 to 1939.
