Abstract

Before industrialization, as most people did not own horses, cities could be only as large as it was feasible to walk from one's place of residence to work and back. As urban populations grew along with job opportunities, the technology of the electric streetcar made it easier for people to live farther away from the central cities where most people worked. This development affected not only the shape of cities but also their development and their politics. The electric streetcar became an important link between cities and their rapidly growing suburbs.
