Abstract

Breadlines represented the desperation felt by many Americans during the Great Depression. They were made up of large numbers of hungry people who waited at soup kitchens for a handout of bread or soup or a cup of coffee. Although breadlines had existed before the Depression, they had been used by relatively few people on the margins of society.
