Abstract

American involvement in the Great War led to increased international influence, rapid economic growth, expansion of the federal government, and new opportunities for women and African Americans. The war also had a negative effect, as congressional legislation led to controversial laws that limited civil liberties (especially for German Americans and antiwar activists) and heightened existing racial tension throughout the United States.
