Abstract

In every culture around the world the cigarette is a universal symbol. It is a highly profitable natural resource, because all the plant needs is a little marketing and refinement to make it a valuable commodity. During industrialization, entrepreneurs experimented and tinkered to make many industries more efficient and, of course, more profitable. The shift to mass production and mass marketing in the late nineteenth century allowed the demand for cigarettes to explode. As the popularity of cigarettes grew, men began to research and innovate in the cigarette industry, including James Albert Bonsack of Roanoke, Virginia.
