Abstract

On the night of April 6, 1712, a group of enslaved Africans revolted in New York City. Most of what has been accepted as the narrative of this armed uprising comes from a letter written by Robert Hunter, who served as the colonial governor of New York and New Jersey from 1710 to 1719. In April 1712, the enslaved population was estimated to be around 1,000 people.
