Abstract

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo officially ended the U.S. War with Mexico (1846–48). The terms of peace set forth in the treaty were a catastrophe for Mexico and a triumph for the expanding United States. After a decisive military defeat, Mexico was forced to sell over half its national territory to the United States for the price of $15 million.
