Abstract

By 1500, most of the European continent was in the process of becoming something else. The bare bones of Europe’s modern nation-states had begun to flesh out; deep-seated religious traditions were being challenged and reshaped; and explorers, traders, and adventurers broached the boundaries of the known world.
