Abstract

One of the most important developments in the United States during the 1830s was a new, more democratic political party system. According to the historian Gordon Wood, this change was part of a slow democratization of American political society. The entire process involved a radical shifting of power from traditional elites to the popular masses that culminated in the 1830s.
