Abstract

There was never a successful slave revolt in the United States, but the fear of revolt was always present in the minds of white slaveholders from the time that slavery became an established fact in the colonies. They organized inspections of slave quarters and patrols, formed “vigilante committees,” and restricted the movements of African Americans and their access to weapons and symbols of revolt.
