Abstract

In 1831 a Frenchman named Alexis de Tocqueville began a tour of the United States. Because he was an outsider, Tocqueville was able to observe U.S. democratic society with an unprejudiced eye; as a committed liberal, he was able to appreciate the differences between European and American social and political activities. His book Democracy in America (1835–1840) has remained one of the most insightful and valuable sources of information on the American way of democracy ever produced.
