Abstract

In November 1786, George Washington, who had led Patriot forces to victory in the Revolutionary War against Great Britain, wrote a letter to James Madison in which he said: No morn ever dawned more favorably than ours did; and no day was ever more clouded than the present! Wisdom, and good examples, are necessary at this time to rescue the political machine from the impending storm.
