Abstract

The Great War for Empire, or the French and Indian War (1754–1763), was the last in a series of conflicts that set the French empire in New France (Canada) against the British in their North American colonies. Most of the previous wars for empire in the eighteenth century had begun as struggles over issues in Europe or over trading rights in the Caribbean. The Great War for Empire, on the other hand, started as a skirmish in the Pennsylvania backwoods. From that beginning, the fighting spread across central Europe and as far east as India and the Philippines and became known outside the North American theater as the Seven Years’ War.
