Abstract

Between 1450 and 1600 four major European powers—Spain, Portugal, France, and England—entered the race for territories and riches in the newly “discovered” Americas. Although the condition of each was unique, the same basic motives and goals impelled them toward exploration, conquest, and eventual settlement. By the middle of the fifteenth century these four nations were engaged in the processes of building modern nation-states: securing power and prestige both domestically and abroad, enforcing religious orthodoxy or conformity, and creating wealth.
