Abstract

In 1763, with the end of the worldwide Seven Years’ War—known as the French and Indian War in North America—one would have been hard-pressed to find a British North American colonist who was unhappy with their colony’s relationship to Britain. Yet within less than a decade, the relationship between thirteen of the North American colonies and Britain had been dramatically damaged— as it turned out, irrevocably. The change surprised the European world, but in reality it was long in the making.
