Abstract

The Alien and Sedition Acts remain one of the most controversial pieces of legislation passed by Congress and marked a turning point in the development of political alignments and party ideology for the new United States. The individual most closely associated with their implementation was the president, John Adams, who signed them into law on July 14, 1798. In retrospect, the acts were almost certainly a violation of First Amendment rights and generally acknowledged as an attempt by Federalists in Congress to control their political opposition.
