Abstract

The year 1619 was momentous for the relatively young Anglo-American colony at Jamestown, Virginia. It encompassed two events that would eventually shape its culture and course and that of what would become the United States for the next 350 years. Although they were seemingly disconnected, the arrival of the first contingent of Africans in the colony and the establishment of the Virginia House of Burgesses set the stage for the development of a slave society in British North America.
