Abstract

The first national government of the United States, the Articles of Confederation, suffered from many deficiencies, which led to its replacement by the Constitution in less than a decade. While concerns such as control of the currency, creation and funding of a national military, border disputes between states, and lack of regulated interstate commerce were mitigated by the ratification of the Constitution in 1788, other issues remained to be addressed.
