Abstract

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the civilization Europe had inherited from the Middle Ages was fundamentally transformed. New inventions like the printing press changed the way people related to the world around them. The revival of ancient learning transformed every area of thought. The religiously unified Catholic world of the Middle Ages was replaced by a religiously fragmented world, while Christendom suffered the rise of the Ottoman Turks on its eastern and southern borders.
