Abstract

The coming of war in August 1914 is often thought to have been received with mass popular enthusiasm, although this was not really the case. The Socialist parties of Europe had already tried to unite in the face of a war by promising to call a general strike if conflict were to break out. The huge population outside the major cities of Europe met the outbreak of war with natural dismay, especially those whose lack of literacy prevented them from keeping up with the events of July 1914.
