Abstract

The revolutionary period of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries marked some of the greatest changes in the history of Europe and the New World. Sweeping changes in economics, culture, and politics transformed societies on both sides of the Atlantic. Traditional laws that had mandated relations between the governing classes and those they ruled were thrown out and replaced with new ones derived (it was thought) from scientific observations of nature, in the name of liberty and equality.
