Abstract

Although conflict between China and Japan had been under way for two years, World War II commenced with Germany's invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. The two theaters of war converged only in December 1941, when the Japanese assault on the naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, marked the war's expansion into the Pacific, bringing the United States directly into the conflict as well.
