Abstract

The postmodern period in Western history is rightly characterized by thoroughgoing skepticism toward traditional ways of reasoning and methods of justification. The justification of a particular action or a general social policy by reference to the authority of empirical science, philosophy, or religion was standard in previous centuries, but the tragic events of the twentieth century have shaken faith in the legitimacy of the old paradigms.
