Abstract
Napoléon Bonaparte (1769–1821) became a legend in his own time. From obscure beginnings—he was the child of a minor Corsican aristocrat—he rose to command the armies of France in the French Revolution. In 1799 he seized power in a relatively bloodless coup and was named first consul of the new government. In 1804 he crowned himself emperor, a title he kept for the next decade. During his career, he achieved military and political successes that have remained unrivaled.
