Abstract

Although many seventeenth-century Europeans retained the propensity for viewing the world as an arena for benevolent and malign supernatural forces, an increasing number among the cultural and intellectual elite did not. This transformation involved the rejection of many traditional magical beliefs and a less supernatural approach to religion. In many ways, science was beginning to replace religion as the ultimate source of truth, at least for educated people.
