Abstract

In 1945, as the war in Europe came to a close, several questions remained unanswered. Despite previous agreement on the principles of the Atlantic Charter, which defined the postwar Allied goals, and the various meetings among the leaders of the Allies (Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Great Britain, known as the Big Three), no one knew for certain what peace would look like. Would Europe return to some type of balance of power? Would the idealism of American politicians be capable of overcoming the realpolitik of Stalin and the Soviet Union?
