Abstract

Romanticism was an intellectual, religious, and artistic movement that began in Europe in the years following the French Revolution and developed throughout the first half of the nineteenth century. Filled with contradictions, this movement embraced the extremes of the human spirit. Many historians take the position that romanticism represented the way in which a subsequent generation worked out the trauma of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars and responded to the pure scientific rationalism of the Enlightenment.
