In this series of letters dated October 11–14, 1755, George Washington, as colonel and commander of the Virginia Regiment opposing the French, wrote to Governor Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia to inform him of affairs on the frontier. As these letters were penned, the American colonies were embroiled in French and Indian War, as the North American theater of the Seven Years’ War came to be known. The Seven Years’ War was fought from 1754 to 1763 and would have more significant consequences than anticipated. Washington and Dinwiddie’s role in the conflict would have a lasting impact on the future of the colonies.
