Abstract

Liberty was one of the main goals of Americans fighting for independence from Great Britain during the Revolutionary War. In 1775, on the eve of the revolution, the fiery Virginian patriot Patrick Henry even declared, “Give me liberty, or give me death!” Yet slavery existed in all thirteen of the rebellious American colonies when the war began and remained legal until almost the end of the conflict. Nonetheless, inspired by the rhetoric of documents such as the Declaration of Independence, which declared “that all men are created equal,” many African slaves hoped that the revolution would usher in a new era of freedom and equality.
